This conference is designed to help educators learn how to effectively develop, design and implement a standards-based grading system that aligns with current instruction and assessment practices, and supports the Iowa Core Curriculum and Iowa’s Competency Based Education model. Classroom practitioners will share resources and practices that have led to successful implementation including: 

• Various homework and Standards-Based Grading policies being used in Iowa schools • Specific practices related to homework and grading that increase the performance of ALL students • Ideas to support the communication of requirements, policies, and expectations established within the standards-based grading process • Ways to develop consensus around assessing learning versus assessing behavior • Plans that address the necessary components to support the implementation of standards-based grading

Matt Townsley taught high school math in Eastern Iowa for six years until 2010 when he transitioned to his current role as the Director of Instruction and Technology for the Solon Community School District. He regularly presents at conferences and leads professional development on the topics of formative assessment and standards-based grading. Matt was the ITEC Administrator of the Year in 2012 and an ASCD Emerging Leader, Class of 2014. One of his articles, "Redesigning Grading—Districtwide" was published in the December 2013 issue of Educational Leadership. He has a BA in Math Education from Wartburg College, M.Ed. in curriculum and instructional technology from Iowa State, and is currently pursuing an Ed.D. at the University of West Georgia.
